Traditional Upholstery School in Wiltshire offers the AMUSF professional training course, plus a broad range of creative courses in upholstery and lampshade making skills. The School was founded by Joanna Heptinstall in 2016.
Joanna and her fellow tutors share a passion and enthusiasm for quality craftsmanship and creativity, and are proud to have created an environment where all our students enjoy their learning journey and produce high quality work stamped with their own individuality.
Traditional Upholstery School is one of only a handful of centres in the UK approved by the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers to deliver its professional upholstery qualification. The AMUSF upholstery diploma is offered as three Stages, each running one day a week across the academic year, allowing students to fit the training round other commitments. We are currently enrolling students for Stage One, starting 15th September 2025 and running on Mondays. Download our info pack and email to express your interest and arrange a visit.

Our range of short courses are completely unique to Traditional Upholstery School and have been devised by us to introduce complete beginners to the wonderful craft of upholstery, as well as to offer specialist training and skills for more experienced upholsterers. They range from one-day workshops, to long weekends and part-time 12-week short courses. Subjects include lampshade making, deep buttoning and headboards using modern skills and techniques. We also run a much-loved upholstery hobby class.
