Upholstery foundation course

A great way to get started. Make four gorgeous projects. Every Thursday for 12 weeks.

Traditional Upholstery School's 12-week long one-day-a-week Upholstery Foundation Course is a great way to start your upholstery journey. Students work on four beautiful bespoke projects: a scatter cushion; a bespoke ottoman footstool; a vintage drop-in seat dining chair; and a sprung dining chair, or another stool if you prefer.

This course is unique to the Traditional Upholstery School and has been carefully developed by our tutors to create a high quality accessible structured course. Our aim is to bridge the gap between full professional training and the typical non-structured hobby class. On completion, students will be able to upholster a wide range of creative bespoke pieces for their home.

01

Scatter cushion

Sewing is essential skill for upholsterers. You will make a beautiful scatter cushion, trimmed with piping or a ricrac scalloped edge and finished with an inserted zip. There are a lot of skills packed into this natty little project, from cutting, measuring and pinning to confident use of your sewing machine.

02

Bespoke ottoman footstool

We simply love an ottoman footstool. It’s the ideal way to insert a beautiful fabric right in the middle of your room… and of course you can put your feet and even a tea tray on it. Perfect!

You can choose from several sizes of frame and styles of leg, including on-trend bobbin legs to classic turned legs with brass castors. All show wood is left raw so that you can be creative with stains, wax or paints.

The bespoke choices continue with your upholstery treatment: create a piped border, add button details or even top it with a loose box cushion. This is an exciting start to your upholstery journey.

03

Reupholster a vintage dining chair

Working with traditional materials such as hessian and horse hair, and hand tools including a magnetic hammer and web stretcher, this is a neat introduction to traditional upholstery. You will reupholster a vintage drop-in seat chair, learning essential knots and stitches, and how to tension fabric to create beautiful lines. Your chair can be painted a glorious colour or polished back to its original glory.

04

Upholster a sprung stitched and stuffed chair or footstool

This is the grand finale of the course. You will learn the core skills of traditional upholstery: hand springing, and using blind and top edge stitches to build a stitched and stuffed seat pad. This ambitious skills-packed project will really get you immersed into upholstery. Students choose to work on an antique Victorian or Edwardian chair, or choose one of our purpose-made footstool frames to create a hall or bed-end bench, footstool or dressing table stool.
